Why an independent number is worth more than your own
Your own measurement answers the engineering question. It does not answer the commercial one, because the party who benefits from the answer produced it. That is not an accusation of dishonesty — it is simply how a buyer, a certification body or a court reads the evidence, and it applies equally to every manufacturer.
The value of a third-party result is not that it is more accurate. It is that ALT has no stake in what it says. We do not design the product, we do not sell it, we do not supply the materials in it and we do not consult on how to improve it. The number is the only thing we have to offer, so the number is the only thing we protect.
Will you help us improve the product if it fails?
No, and that is the point. We will tell you exactly what the measurement showed and under what conditions, which is usually enough for your own engineers to see where the problem is. For design work, use an acoustic consultant of your own choosing — if we did both, our report would no longer be independent evidence and its value to you would collapse.
Is verification testing accredited?
It depends entirely on the measurement. Where the work uses one of our three accredited calibration services the result is accredited; the material and product testing that most verification work involves is traceable but outside certificate 24-LB0054. We state which applies before you book, not after.
Claims are easy. Specifications, calculations, simulations and datasheets have never been cheaper to produce, and that is exactly why independently measured evidence is worth more than it used to be.
What we verify
- A manufacturer's published acoustic claim, measured independently
- Competing products in a tender, tested identically and compared
- Imported products against the specification they were sold on
- Production samples against the original type test
- Supplier specifications before a large procurement commitment
- Prototype performance before a launch claim is made
Why our independence is the product
ALT does not sell, design or supply the products it tests, and has no commercial interest in whether a result is good or bad. That is what allows a procurement department to put an ALT report in a tender file, and what stops a competitor dismissing it.
