The same measurement means different things to different buyers. A facade contractor needs a number a certifier will accept; a product developer needs a number that is comparable between iterations; a factory needs a number that stands up in an occupational health file. Below is how the work maps onto each.

What each sector usually needs first

• Construction and facade — sound insulation of doors, windows, glazing units and partition assemblies, tested at the size actually installed, reported as STC and Rw so both the ASTM and ISO routes are covered.
• Acoustic material manufacturers — absorption to ISO 354 and ASTM C423 for the declaration, impedance tube for screening formulations before committing to a full test.
• Product and appliance manufacturers — sound power in a qualified free field, for declared noise emission and for comparison against a competitor.
• Occupational health and safety — calibration of the sound level meters, calibrators and dosimeters the exposure record depends on. This is where an expired certificate does the most damage.
• Environmental and regulatory consultants — accredited calibration of the instruments behind measurements that will be submitted, challenged, or both.
• Research and development — measurement designed for comparability between iterations rather than for a certificate.
